Sixteen Deochs of War, Rebellion, Invasion and the Near Fall of Loures

By Ramanayan Caesar in the Dark Ages

III: Rebellion

Background

The situation in Undine had always been a tense one with several rebellions and uprisings in the early aisling era. In the spring of Deoch 39 a patrol of Loures soldiers in Undine went missing. A second patrol sent to find the first never returned. This lead to the commander of the Undine Garrison, Gnaeus Pompeius Caprarius, into launching a massive crackdown on suspected rebel activity.

In what was clearly becoming a pattern, Loures requested aisling assistance in finding and destroying a suspected base the rebels were operating from. Anonymous notes purported to be from the rebels also requested aisling aid.

In what would become known as the “Raiders of Undine” incident, aislings found themselves on opposite sides as they choose to align with Loures or the Undine Rebels, with a large majority supporting the rebels.

Battle in the North Lands

The Loures aligned aislings, despite being outnumbered, were initially much better organized. They first gathered together outside of the Cail temple (much to the outrage of more than a few in the Cail fellowship). Following clues and speaking to various mundanes, the loyalists found the rebel base on nearby Mount Giragan.

Despite the curious presence of some goblins alongside the Undine Rebels, the loyalists were able slaughter the defenders and and burned the base to the ground. The aisling warrior Kaiderai personally engaged the unnamed rebel leader in combat and slew him.

As Kaiderai and his loyalists were battling on the mountain, the aislings who supported the rebels were attempting to locate Commander Caprarius without much success. Despite the large number of rebel supporters, they remained disorganized until a surprising figure turned up: Krytos. Taking charge, the former leader of the dark faction of the Light vs. Dark War galvanized the rebels into action and laid out a clear plan for finding Commander Caprarius.

Following clues and thanks to resources provided by Krytos and his Dynasty guild, a small rebel force under the priest Timelock learned of Caprarius’ location and came upon the commander’s retinue on the road to Suomi. Particularly telling of Loures’ militarily weakened state, most of Caprarius’ men appeared to be young untrained teenagers who were cut down within seconds. Finally a well placed blast of deo saighead from Timelock ended the life of Commander Caprarius.

For a moment it seemed as if Undine might actually break free of Loures. However, thanks to Kaiderai and his loyalists' efforts, they were able to buy Loures just enough time to rush reinforcements to Undine.

Those aislings who took part the slaying of Caprarius had inscribed on their legends: “Aided the Undine Rebels – Deoch 39, Fall”

Those who took part in the slaying of the rebel leader had inscribed on their legends: “Defender of Loures – Deoch, 39 Fall” (Not to be confused with the similar ‘Defender of Loures Invasion’ legend, which was given to those aislings who took part in the Siege of Loures described in the next section.)

Memories

Having previously assisted Loures in coordinating aisling assistance during the ‘Mysteries of the Dubhaim’ and ‘Murder Mystery’ incidents, I was not entirely surprised when I was once again asked to help coordinate the efforts of loyalist aislings for operations in Undine.

My specific duties were to setup an area where loyalist aislings could gather and then to act as a liaison for relaying orders from Loures to the loyalist aisling groups present.

For the first duty I opted to gather the loyalists just outside of the Cail Temple. For practical purposes this was an easy location that any aisling could find. It also served a secondary purpose to put the Cail Fellowship on notice that they were being watched closely for any seditious activities.

When the time had arrived and the all loyalists groups had gathered, I gave them what information I had received on where to search for the suspected rebel base and sent them on their way.

The aislings giving support to the Undine Rebels were much greater in number. As they were meeting at the Sapphire Stream Monastery I was able to observe their numbers as they passed by the Cail temple on their way further north.

While waiting outside of the Cail temple I received updates from both the loyalists and the rebels (some of my guild members had slipped into the rebel ranks). Kaiderai and the loyalists had begun searching Mount Giragan, while my other sources told me the rebels were disorganized and unsure how to proceed.

Then came a surprise in the form of Krytos, Chadul’s chosen leader during the Light vs. Dark war. Krytos had showed up alongside a large number of Dynasty guild members. Within a short time they had organized the rebel supporters and galvanized them into action.

Before I had a chance to contemplate this curious development, word arrived that the loyalists had found the rebel base and confirmed the rebel leader was indeed present. I decided to make my way to Giragan. As I passed through Undine I observed the aisling Timelock and a small rebel group moving very quickly towards the road that leads to Suomi.

Word then came in that Kaiderai had killed the rebel leader. His group was making its way back down the mountain with the head of the rebel leader. Before I could even process this information, I was nearly knocked down by hordes rebel supporters rushing past me. From their unguarded shouts I learned that Caprarius, the Commander of the Loures Garrison in Undine, had been spotted.

I attempted to direct some loyalists to aid the commander, but it was too lake. Just seconds later word arrived that an aisling named Timelock had killed Caprarius with a bolt of deo saghead.

As Kaiderai and his group arrived back from the mountain, I congratulated them that they had probably just saved Loures’ position in Undine. The loss of Caprarius and his men was a blow certainly, but with the rebel base destroyed and it’s leader killed, it would be unlikely the rebels would be able to take advantage of the situation.
